Super Mario Sunshine Starts the Evolution of 3D Nintendo Games

Nintendo 3D games have obviously improved since Super Mario Sunshine. Mario first appeared in a 3D game on the N64 back in 1966. 6 years later, Nintendo played a pretty risky card with Super Mario Sunshine trying to beat the unbeatable Super Mario 64. But once again, they pulled it off.

The game opens up with the first of multiple cutscenes, a dolphin-shaped island whose main inhabitants are the Noki and Piantas. Once they land on the island, it isn’t so sunny, and there is paint and graffiti everywhere. Supposedly, Mario has been painting M’s everywhere around the island and graffiti in general. He is flown to the island to clean up “his” mess. His reward for going all the way to the island to clean it up is to be thrown in prison overnight. When he s on Isle Delfino, he has a machine attached to his waist, called FLUDD. He uses FLUDD to wash off the paint on the buildings. You find out pretty early in the game that it wasn’t actually Mario who did it, it was shadow Mario.

Nintendo got a lot of criticism for this one, mostly for the quality of the camera, and levels. If you’ve played the game, you’ve seen how messy the quality is. This adds to how it helped the evolution of 3D Mario games. The games now are amazing quality and are very smooth. Also, for most, the levels were all very much similar and had the same feeling. There wasn’t much progression like in the other games Nintendo had created. In short, the whole game wasn’t that bad, but there are some reasons why I never really finished the game.
